Farewell, tumblr.!
Adios amigos, I’m heading to blogspot.com permanently. It’s definitely winning me over with its features and organization and the layout of the reader: instead of being bombarded by half-videos or pictures or nonsense on tumblr. Anyway, see you there!

I will really miss the layout of my tumblr. page though..boo.

Yes, you can laugh at me.
I would do this. I decided tumblr was a bit too pretentious for what I wanted my travel blog to be. I love tumblr’s simplicity and beauty of the layouts, but I’m going to use my old Blogger address for my travel blog. I like comments and how much freedom I get in deciding the layout (though it can be too much—I’ve wasted much time on it today). I am deciding this at...

hasta agosto, amigos.
Oh my word. What a day. Whilst everyone in Hillsdale rejoices at the threat of a snowstorm, I am stuck indefinitely in the Upper Peninsula.
This wouldn’t be so bad if I loved snow or if I enjoyed talking on the phone to rather unpleasant strangers about something I don’t know much at all. As it is, I believe today I set a record for strongest detestation of snow and of having to speak...
For the sake of sanity and packing
this is it.
My next post will be on jcu-europe.tumblr.com. I’m letting this blog rest until August 2 or so, once I’m finally back in the US.
Disclaimer: I realized I will probs still update this using my cell phone before I leave for realz. It will be the closest thing to Twitter that I will ever experience—simple status updates merely to alleviate my own boredom and perhaps...
I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need.

I have such wonderful friends!
I’m tumbling out of boredom right now. And I’m sending this post from my phone—what? Yes. This ludite is changing her ways..a tiny bit

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:
a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a...

“What we call ‘being in love’ is a glorious state, and, in several ways, good for us. It helps to make us generous and courageous, it opens our eyes not only to the beauty of the beloved but to all beauty, and it subordinates (especially at first) our merely animal sexuality; in that sense, love is the great conqueror of lust. No one in his senses would deny that...

Among the huge Atlantic-waves of bereavement, poverty, temptation, and reproach, we learn the power of Jehovah, because we feel the littleness of man. Thank God, then, if you have been led by a rough road: it is this which has given you your experience of God’s greatness and lovingkindness. Your troubles have enriched you with a wealth of knowledge to be gained by no...

I don’t know if this could ever be of use to anyone else, but I’m taking time to recommend faxzero.com. Lately I’ve had to do all sorts of adult-like things, such as faxing and talking to strangers on the telephone etc., and this website is wonderfully helpful. It sends free faxes of any document on your computer! Yes. For 1.99 they’ll do something fancier I guess, but I...
You are our letter, written in our hearts, known and read by all men; being manifested that you are a letter of Christ, cared for by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts. Such confidence we have through Christ toward God.

Yesterday, I spent half an hour looking at photos of Africa and huts and Kenya. I want to peer out the window of a mud hut to see a great, big orange sun rise over the flat horizon, silhouetting a distant tree. That’s the stereotypically lovely image I see when I think of Africa. Watching Madagascar 2 sparked these daydreams, as ridiculous as that is.
My gosh.
This is my one-hundredth...
Hebrews 13:12-16
Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people through His own blood, suffered outside the gate. So, let us go out to Him outside the camp, bearing His reproach. For here we do not have a lasting city, but we are seeking the city which is to come. Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name. And do...

In reference to my last post, stating that life is indeed bearable, an explanation: for what may sound to some like pessimism, it is quite the opposite. In fact, for me it is so very optimistic! For a time I had fallen prey to the lie that life is impossible, a mere eighty or so years of miserable existence with momentary lapses labeled happiness.
I now see the falsity of that. There are...
Life is so bearable!
The new years walk, restoring Through a bright cloud of tears, the years, restoring With a new verse the ancient rhyme. Redeem The time. Redeem The unread vision in the higher dream While jewelled unicorns draw by the gilded hearse.

(Only T.S. could throw in that last, rich line and preserve the beauty of the poem. Who else could include unicorns and...

While driving through the northern Lower Peninsula
The gray road paved before me, leading north To a distant hearth burning hot and bright Two cold feet in wet boots seeking that warmth Familiarity is lost tonight Leaving here familiar faces, voices Awaiting now bundled arms and laughter The presence of snow, the need for choices: The tree trimmed, what to do with it after? The hat and the scarf or the chair and fire? The fresh whitened road slyly...

There’s no time like the present to procrastinate. I’m sitting in my room, facing a now-bare wall, pausing for a few moments from packing. And when I say packing, I mean everything. I leave tomorrow after my 8 AM German exam. At quarter to three the day before I head home, I wish I could say I had more than half a box full, but then I’d be lying.
Yesterday I spent quality time...
YIKES. I think that was a mini-heart attack or something.
…I just bought my ticket for Europe!!
Six months abroad—February through May in Sevilla, España and then who knows where, until I return home in August. (Lord willing—of course.)
Oh my word. I’m sort of freaking out.
E-mail me, Skype me, keep in touch with me please. And I’ll keep a blog so you can be up to...
A birthday poem for Laura Brown
Laura Brown, you’re such a dear friend
Our e-mail correspondence diligent to tend
And to think we’ve only recently come
together as pals: you are a loyal chum.
Your kindness is truly a blessing to me
You’re sincere! With freckles as cute as can be.
Wishing from afar, with miles between
The best of birthdays, on this 12-13!
I spent a wonderful afternoon with beautiful friends in freshly fallen snow.
It’s funny how much better I tolerate snow when I’m happy.
Today was perfect and Narnia-like. If only I had a coat to match my hat.

Write one leaf about a rock garden.
Early this past summer I visited Michigan State with Josh. Around that time, my life had become even more insane. While strolling about various gardens, we happened upon the rock garden. Seeking serenity, I entered. There was no rake to be found to arrange the gravel so I climbed the highest rock and balanced on one foot, striking what I would like to think is some sort of yoga pose....

(reminds me of this article about Christian hipsters)
This is as much for self-edification as anything…thought it was worth sharing.
The next time I attend class on Hillsdale’s campus, I will be a senior.
Whoa!
I like the sound of that…I think. I do but then—what am I doing with my life? Well, let me just laugh off that question. Will it ever be answered? Probs not (yes, that was an abbrev). It doesn’t seem like I should still have an entire year left, and yet it seems like I only recently arrived....
And there will come a time, you’ll see, with no more tears. And love will not break your heart, but dismiss your fears. Get over your hill and see what you find there, With grace in your heart and flowers in your hair. And now I cling to what I knew I saw exactly what was true But oh no more. That’s why I hold, That’s why I hold with all I have That’s why I hold. I will...

A birthday poem for Melissa Caton
You and I have had adventures
on both of the coasts!
You are the Mel Caton that
I love the most.
At a lake in the east,
in almost Nowhere,
We’ve spent a week laughing/tanning/eating/shuffling—
as usual, quite a crazy pair.
Your humour and love are always close at hand
Whene’er we embark on a scheme, small or grand.
On this your birthday, I hope you can tell
That we,...

A belated birthday poem for Sadie Hoyt
You’re as sweet as the honey
we drink in our tea–
Roastaroma, of course–
in an atmosphere cozy.
Your kindness is as unfailing
as our love for BBC.
You recycle paper
and refresh friends’ hearts;
And like your father, value only quality.
Happy are those who in your life have a part,
And I’m thankful that that includes me!

In other news, I’ve found a very attractive round-trip ticket to Sevilla, España between February and August. Now, to purchase it.

Writing from a kitchen table in the Upper Peninsula. It’s a crisp and bright morning here in Marquette, but the sun is nowhere to be found. That’s one positive aspect of this snow I suppose– creating a light atmosphere. It’s been falling all morning. I appreciate, though slightly grudgingly, how it hides the dead, brown leaves. I might be more friendly to it if I weren’t...
